The Gunawan Jusuf Story, Making Business Work

He is certainly best known as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Sugar Group Companies, but what makes Gunawan Jusuf different is that he actually oversees several different independent Indonesian companies that grow and refine sugar for the purposes of creating many popular sugar products. In addition to plantations and refineries all over Indonesia, Sugar Group Companies also operates offices all over Indonesia. The difficult part is, he has to bring all of that together to work in sync for the good of the whole.

Recently, Gunawan Jusuf published a book, entitled “Blue Gold.” That book is different than most business books because it features a frank discussion of the relative scarcity and the high value of water as our most important and precious commodity. Not only is water crucial to the lives of humans everywhere, it is also essential to his business and many others.

From his position as Sugar Group Companies CEO, Gunawan Jusuf has guided the organization to produce increasing amounts of Gulaku, which is a premium, commercial, refined sugar product that is a household name all over Indonesia. It is not the only product, however; the company features many other popular products. Sugar Group Companies is actually not just a single business, but a collection of businesses that operate independently. Getting all of them to work together might be his greatest accomplishment. Maybe.
